Local food is important for so many reasons; notably it:
- supports local producers, suppliers, retailers and purveyors, and so helps to boost the local economy;
- helps strengthen local communities by developing local resilience;
- reduces the impact on the environment by minimising food miles;
- helps develop an appreciation of local history, landscape and culture – e.g., by exploring local varieties of foods such as apples or potatoes!
A good place to start thinking about this is the Sustainable Food Trust.
